The translation team of the Court held the “ADDRESS” Seminar on 18 May 2018. The team members Yao Nina, Zhang Pengfei and Chen Gaoyang delivered speeches concerning how to improve maritime legal English. They further discussed the new requirements of being a maritime judge in the new era brought by the construction of international maritime judicial center, which shall includes: i) keep close eyes on legislation and adjustment trend, discussions and surveys regarding relevant international conventions initiated by IMO, CMI and other influential organizations, ii) study on typical English maritime cases and translate some of the most relevant ones into Chinese, iii) we should absorb the essence of study carried out by IMO and CMI and the judicial practice of major shipping nations in a critical way, combine China’s reality, and contribute Chinese wisdom, iv) we should also actively participate in the discussions regarding formulation and revision of international conventions, and gradually export Chinese rules.
They also introduced an English case regarding limitation of liability for maritime claims 【Margolle and Another v. Delta Maritime Co.Ltd, and Others( the “Saint Jacques II” and “Gudermes”)】. Through the case study, the team members get a general picture of the legislative background, the development, the main principles, and the current debate and controversy of the 1976 convention.
The translation team will continue to strengthen the maritime legal English study, and gradually improve the external influence of the Court through specific study and specific lecture.
